Healthy Living

It’s never too late to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Our Practice Nurses and HCA can offer expert advice to help you maintain a healthy weight, detailed information to help you have a healthy diet and can offer advice on how to increase your fitness levels with activities you can enjoy.

Guidance sheets for lowering cholesterol, salt and general healthy eating can be obtained from the practice nurse on request. Advice can be obtained from any of the clinicians at the surgery

Healthy Eating

Eating a balanced diet is one of the best ways to ensure healthy living. Make an appointment to see one of our Nurses or HCA for advice tailored to your lifestyle.

You should eat a variety of foods to obtain all of the essential nutrients. Too much as well as too little can be bad for you. The key to a healthy balanced diet is not to ban or omit any foods or food groups but to balance what you eat by consuming a variety of foods from each food group in the right proportions for good health.

Fruit and vegetables should make up about a third of your daily diet and can be eaten as part of every meal, as well as being the first choice for a snack.

You should eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables each day. Research suggests this can help to protect against cancer, obesity and various chronic diseases such as heart disease.

Milk and dairy foods need to be consumed in smaller proportions than the other categories. They contain nutrients essential to our diet, so it’s important not to leave them out altogether. They have a high saturated fat content, but they’re an important source of calcium, which is essential for healthy bones and teeth. It is best to choose low-fat or reduced-fat versions.

Foods made up of high fat and sugar should only be eaten sparingly because, although they’re an important energy source, they contain very few nutrients and are ‘empty calories’.

Children’s Health

Childhood vaccinations can be booked in any nursing session – the health authority sends reminders out detailing when and which vaccines are due for your child.

Regular development checks are also done at the surgery.

If you have any concerns with your child’s health, make an appointment with either your GP or Health Visitor.

Stop Smoking Advice

We offer a great smoking cessation programme and our Practice Nurse and HCA are happy to see anyone who would like to quit smoking for a healthier life style. Don’t wait – call us today to book an appointment with one of our professionals

Help with Alcohol

If you are concerned about your intake, come in and see our Nurse who can give you advice on your alcohol consumption. We also have alcohol workers assigned to our practice to support those of you who really want to quit alcohol.

Minor Illnesses

We have a qualified minor illness nurse at our practice who can prescribe medication if necessary. This is often quicker quicker than having to wait for a doctor’s appointment.

Most minor illness can be self-treated. The pharmacist is also trained in this area and can give advice on any medication. The nurse or doctors are always happy to give telephone advice, or see you in the surgery if symptoms persist or worse.
